Sand River Predator Deterrent Lights

During the Royal African Safaris AGM in December last year, the RAS Partners and the rest of our RAF ground team successfully donated the first 280 solar-powered predator deterrent lights to families living on the edge of the Maasai Mara Reserve near the Kenya-Tanzania border with Loliondo.

This distribution has benefited over 400 people from applicant families whose livelihoods depend on livestock in this area.

For these pastoralist Maasai communities, the lights offer protection and a chance to mitigate the challenges faced by living alongside predators.

They were also one of the main requests that came from the surveys we did with families in this area last year, as part of our 2025-2030 strategy project.

Lion Lights: A Kenyan Innovation

These “lion lights” were created by Richard Turere, a Maasai boy from Kenya who, at age 11, invented a low-cost, solar-powered LED lighting system to protect his family’s livestock from lions, reducing human-wildlife conflict and inspiring global conservation efforts, even leading to a TED Talk and recognition as a young inventor.

The solar-powered devices flash intermittently throughout the night, mimicking a human with a flashlight protecting their vulnerable bomas (livestock enclosures). This simple yet effective solution deters nocturnal predators such as lions, hyenas, and leopards from approaching, without causing them any harm.

By protecting livestock, the lights also protect lions and other carnivores from retaliatory killings, creating a win-win for both communities and conservation.

The impact is notable: research has shown that these lights can result in up to a 96% decline in nocturnal lion attacks after installation (Okemwa, B., et al., 2018).

“Now we can sleep”

This first distribution was a great success and has already shown the profound difference these lights make in daily life. For families who previously couldn’t sleep at night because of fear of predators threatening their livestock and homes, the lights have brought a sense of security. As many recipients have shared, “now we can sleep.”

Recipient Simanka ole Kortot said, “Since I received lights, all of us at the boma worry less, including my dogs. I haven’t heard or seen any issue with hyenas or leopards.”

Upon receiving her lights, Nasuju Munguti said: ‘This is another project we have seen from the Royal African Foundation where what we requested and were promised will happen, happened. Those people written during the community engagement meeting did receive their lights as promised. No one missed. As a widow, I will go home happy knowing that someone cared for me. Thank you RAF”.

Our team hopes to move forward with phase two to donate at least another 200 lights as soon as we are able. The cost for this next phase will be $14,000, including all the lights, transport, community training, and continued monitoring and evaluation.
